About Tom

A Lifelong Journey in Music

Tom Bryant’s love for the piano began at an early age. By the time he was ten years old, he was already accompanying his church choir in his hometown of Elberton, Georgia—a sign of the musical path that would shape his life. His early talent grew into a lifelong pursuit of artistry, teaching, and performance. During his master’s program, Tom studied in Vienna, Austria, following in the footsteps of musical greats like Mozart and Schubert, an experience that deepened both his technical mastery and his passion for sharing music with others.

Education & Training

Tom earned his B.M. (magna cum laude) and M.M. degrees from the University of Georgia, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later completed his Doctor of Music degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Along the way, he studied piano under world-class teachers and mentors including Despy Karlas, Jane Douglas, Hans Petermandl, Maria Regina Seidlhofer-Luponi, and Donald Isaak, and studied accompanying with Laurence Davis and Erik Werba.

Performance & Professional Recognition

Respected as both a solo pianist and an artistic accompanist, Tom has built a reputation for excellence that extends far beyond Memphis, TN. He performs actively throughout the region, and has traveled nationally and internationally for recitals and collaborations. In Memphis, he is a trusted and sought-after pianist for both musicians and community events, and he works as a part-time church musician at Farmington Presbyterian Church in Germantown, TN.

In 2013, Tom was honored with the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching at Rhodes College, recognizing his dedication to motivating and inspiring students to reach their full potential.

Teaching & Mentorship

At Rhodes College, Tom teaches courses ranging from foundational classes like music appreciation, history, and theory to specialized courses such as “Music and Literature.” Beyond the classroom, he offers piano instruction to students of all ages and skill levels. His teaching is defined by patience, encouragement, and adaptability—meeting each student where they are and helping them grow at their own pace.

Tom’s students and colleagues often describe him as kind, approachable, and deeply supportive. With over 50 years of experience, he has worked alongside countless musicians, coaching and collaborating in ways that bring out their very best.

Mission & Values

Tom’s passion for the piano is matched only by his love of teaching. His goal is to share the joy of music—whether by guiding a young beginner at the keyboard, helping an experienced musician prepare for performance, or creating a memorable atmosphere for a wedding, funeral, or special event. His enthusiasm for music is contagious, and he is dedicated to making each musical experience meaningful, personal, and inspiring.
